Examining dolphin hydrodynamics provides clues to calf-loss during tuna fishing
نویسنده
چکیده
‘dolphin-friendly’ tuna knows that dolphins can be unintended victims of the tuna-fishing industry. Now, a mathematical model shows that dolphin calves can gain up to 90% of the energy required for swimming if they position themselves correctly relative to their mothers, but that the calves are in danger of being lost if this positioning breaks down [1]. As observations of dolphins in the wild support the model (see ‘The bottom line’ box for a summary of the findings), the new work starts to give a possible explanation why dolphin numbers remain at unnaturally low levels despite changes in the tuna-fishing industry aimed at protecting dolphin populations.

The hydrodynamics of dolphin drafting
BACKGROUND Drafting in cetaceans is defined as the transfer of forces between individuals without actual physical contact between them. This behavior has long been surmised to explain how young dolphin calves keep up with their rapidly moving mothers. It has recently been observed that a significant number of calves become permanently separated from their mothers during chases by tuna vessels. ...
متن کاملPredicting Interactions between Common Dolphins and the Pole-and-Line Tuna Fishery in the Azores
Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) are responsible for the large majority of interactions with the pole-and-line tuna fishery in the Azores but the underlying drivers remain poorly understood. In this study we investigate the influence of various environmental and fisheries-related factors in promoting the interaction of common dolphins with this fishery and estimate the resultant catch losses...
متن کاملDuration of unassisted swimming activity for spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) calves: implications for mother-calf separation during tuna purse-seine sets
Size-related differences in power production and swim speed duration may contribute to the observed deficit of nursing calves in relation to lactating females killed in sets by tuna purse-seiners in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP). Power production and swim-speed duration were estimated for northeastern spotted dolphins (Stenella attenuata), the species (neonate through adult) most oft...
متن کاملEstimating common dolphin bycatch in the pole-and-line tuna fishery in the Azores
Small-scale artisanal fisheries can have a significant negative impact in cetacean populations. Cetacean bycatch has been documented in the pole-and-line tuna fishery in the Azores with common dolphins being the species more frequently taken. Based on data collected by observers on ∼50% of vessels operating from 1998 to 2012, we investigate the influence of various environmental and fisheries-r...
متن کاملTuna stocks threatened
Urgent measures to save falling stocks of tuna in the world's second biggest tuna fishery — the eastern Pacific— have failed to be implemented, according to several environmental groups. Closure of the fishery, both by area and by time, was demanded by the groups to protect rapidly decreasing Pacific populations of yellowfin and bigeye tuna. But the annual meeting of the Inter American Tropical...
